Cycling the Low Impact Solution

Updated: Oct 25, 2021

It is no secret the greatest gift of abundance is our good health. Some of you may already know, my expertise was in population health and disease prevention. I have become an avid cycler this past year and thought it a good idea to share with you why.

Cycling is a sports activity increasing in popularity. Not only a nostalgic activity from our youth, it now serves as a viable means of transportation that is both environmentally friendly and economically sound. Most importantly, cycling is a form of exercise and enjoyment that promises to improve our overall well-being and health. It is ideal for those wanting to get fit and stay fit.

Cycling is also ideal for persons with limited choices for activity due to joint pain. Those with joint issues related to either injury or disease like osteoarthritis can take advantage of cycling. Peddling on a bicycle promises to strengthen the knee muscle without further injuring the joint. It allows the rider the opportunity to continue to exercise their knee. This strengthening of the knee muscle will minimize further muscle weakness, increase stability, and limit the risk of re-injury.

Cycling has many other health benefits, including:

1 Improving your cardiovascular system and decreasing your risk of heart disease.

2 Improving your muscle strength and coordination

3. Helps you achieve and maintain a healthy body

4. Strengthens your immune system to help ward off disease and illness

5. Improves your mood

6. Increases your overall energy and stamina

7. Promoted good sleep

Outdoor cycling does, however, come with some risks. To prevent injury, always wear a helmet, be properly fitted to your bike, follow the road rules, and be alert to motor vehicles, other cyclists, and pedestrians.

When the weather doesn’t permit, one can always opt to use a stationary bike indoors. This activity can be a timesaving exercise when done in front of the television or while reading a book. Be sure to discuss with your healthcare provider your plan to get back on a bike to ensure it’s the right fitness regime for you.
